About the race

The Trail Galibier‑Thabor takes place in the Valloire–Valmeinier area of France’s Savoie, about two hours south of Geneva, Switzerland. There are multiple distances, each set high in the Alps and taking runners through alpine terrain, over high-mountain cols, and along ridge lines.

The main event is Trail Galibier‑Thabor, a 74 km mountain crossing with roughly 4,064m of ascent. It unfolds in two stages and includes a bivouac at 2,250m altitude before a pursuit-style second day, with team departures based on their times from the previous stage on their way back into Valloire. Participants benefit from an overnight stay in an organizer-provided tent (sleeping materials not provided) at the Mottets hamlet, a massage at the end of the first day’s stage, and meals including Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast.

Shorter solo alternatives start on the first day with the Trail du Thabor (32 km and 1,967m of climbing) and continue into Sunday with the Trail des Aiguilles (about 21 km with 1,264m of ascent) and the Trail du Lac Vert (12 km with 616m of gain). These routes all begin at altitude, climb through mountain pastures and ridges, and return by varied terrain, offering scenic glimpses of the Galibier massif.

Family-friendly options like the cadets Pom-Pom 8k for 16-17 year olds and various children’s loops take place on the same weekend as the main races, giving younger participants a taste of trail running.

Whether tackling the full mountain traverse– complete with a bivouac!–  sampling high-altitude solos, or enjoying a family run among the peaks, Trail Galibier‑Thabor offers a unique collection of trail races in an off-the-beaten path location.
