Run the Alps Guide Emma Houterman

Hometown

Between the Chamonix, The Hague, and the hills and mountains of northern UK.

A bit about me

I have lived in many places in Europe, as well as the USA, Africa and Asia. I’ve traveled across the globe, but the Alps remain special to me. Even after years of exploring, I’m still floored by the mountain views on a simple morning walk to the bakery. There is a unique magic in these peaks that never fades. Equally I am a big fan of French bread and pastries!

My other life

Before committing to the mountains, I worked in Development Finance, managing investments in emerging markets focused on social inclusion and climate action, as well as working in energy transition. While I found the mission rewarding, the pull of fresh air was stronger than the glow of a computer screen. I am hoping to be able to combine the boardroom with the great outdoors.

In my free time

For me, it’s all about maintaining a base level of fitness and skills so I can say yes to any adventure — be it cycling, climbing, hiking, or trail running. I believe that speed doesn’t matter; the enjoyment of the environment does. I’m usually accompanied by my partner, Paul, a fellow IML, and our English Cocker Spaniel, Milo. Milo’s favourite sport is mountain biking, mostly because it’s the only time we can actually keep up with him!

Fun fact

I once cycled the entire length of Africa.

Favorite Alp trail run

It’s hard to choose when every trail feels like a postcard, but I’m drawn to the quieter variants of the Tour du Mont Blanc. Also, running up Mont Buet early in the season, when the alpine wildflowers are in full bloom, is a mind-bogglingly beautiful experience that everyone should see at least once.
