Based in Samedan, Switzerland, in the Upper Engadine valley of Switzerland’s Graubünden region, the Engadin Ultra Trail is a two-day event that includes four races on the panoramic trails between Zuoz and Samedan. The Engadine’s broad, high valley, wide skies, and larch forests have attracted visitors since the 19th century, and the region’s Romansh-speaking culture gives it a character distinct from other Swiss alpine areas. This is a wonderful region in which to take part in a trail race!
The longest race is the EUT102, which covers 102km with 5,677 meters of climbing. The race has a night start, and loops from Samedan with a climb to a high point of 2,818m at the Fuorcla Val Champagna, taking in the viewpoints of Corviglia, Muottas Muragl, and Piz Kesch before finishing back in Samedan’s Promulins Arena.
The EUT53 covers 53km with 2,639m of elevation gain, starting in the historic village of Zuoz and sharing the final section of the EUT102 via the Padella panorama trail.
The ET23 is 23km long and has 1,064m of climbing, beginning in La Punt and joining the Via Engadin trail towards Bever before the final climb to Marguns.
The ET16 is a 16km loop with 791m of climbing from Samedan, doubling as a hike-and-run option thanks to the generous time limit. Junior trail distances are also available for younger participants.
Samedan sits at 1,720m elevation in the Upper Engadine region of Switzerland, about two hours by train from Zurich and well connected by the Rhaetian Railway, which is part of the national SBB network.
The local Nusstorte, or nut tart, is a dense, caramelized walnut pastry, that is a Graubünden speciality worth seeking out after the finish, or as a tasty refueling option. If you try some, let us know how you like it! It’s a Run the Alps staff favorite.
