The Trail Run Aeschiried is a self-supported trail race set above Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Like its Trail Run Series by Trail-Maniacs siblings, the event runs on a minimum-infrastructure model. There are no aid stations, self-navigation is required, and runners carry their own food and water throughout.

All distances start and finish in Aeschiried, a small community perched on the hillside above Lake Thun, roughly 10km from the town of Thun, Switzerland. Thun sits at the western end of the lake and is easily reached by rail from Bern, which is about 30 minutes away. Bern connects directly to Zurich by train in under an hour.

Down in Thun, the 12th-century castle built by the Dukes of Zähringen still stands above the old town — a fitting backdrop for a race run on some of the oldest trails in the Bernese Oberland.

There are three distances . The Königsdisziplin, German for “king’s discipline,” is the flagship course at 52km with 4,200m of elevation gain. Runners on this distance can choose their own start time between 1:00 and 6:00 a.m., with a mass start at 6:00 a.m. and a cutoff of 5:00 p.m.

The Klassiker covers 24km with 1,350m of gain, tracing a classic loop through the trails above the Thun Lake valley with majestic views across to the Bernese Alps.

The Geniesser, which translates as “the enjoyer,” is 12km with 800m of gain and for 2026, there’s a new race course too! The 12 km distance serves as an accessible entry point to the race series, and delivers a genuine day out in mountain terrain. A kids course of about 800 meters is also available for any interested, budding trail stars.
