Classic Italian Dolomites Self-Guided

A self-guided adventure is an exceptional way to experience the Dolomites. The trails are well-marked, easy to navigate, and offer an incredible variety of scenery. There are wide alpine meadows and traditional mountain huts and dramatic limestone peaks to stare at!

One of the best aspects of fast-packing independently is the freedom to set your own pace. You can pause to enjoy the spectacular views at your own discretion. The area feels peaceful and spacious.

For a solo traveler, the Alpe di Siusi offers an ideal balance of independence, beauty, and accessibility. It feels adventurous without being complicated, making it particularly rewarding for anyone who enjoys exploring mountains on their own.

I would say for absolute beginners, this might not be the best choice, but for anyone very familiar with navigating steep hikes and who understands their own capabilities, preferences and limits, this is pretty ideal.

Why

I chose this trip because I wanted to see the Dolomites, and, I wanted a way to be guided by local experts without having to be a part of a scheduled group.

Advice

Self-Guided can be a great way to see the Dolomites, don't be scared to try this! Especially if you have decent skills using GPX files and reading maps etc. Run The Alps gives you excellent information about the trails, and things to see and do if you have extra time. Also, most people do speak English. Don't be shy to try to learn German or Ladin though - they always seemed appreciative when I asked how to say words in their language.

Highlight

I truly loved every route that Run the Alps chose for me. My favourite parts were: sitting in the Alpe di Siusi area. It is a vast rolling landscape of green meadows, scattered wooden huts, grazing cows, and wildflowers. Rising behind it are some of the Dolomites' most recognizable iconic spires. I spent a lot of time sitting there (almost too much time as I had a long day ahead of me!) but this is the spell the place will put on you! My other favourite part was getting into the Hut at the end of this long day, to be met with delicious mountain food - home made pumpkin soup, fresh salad, and a meat dish I can only describe as transformative!
