The Perfect Way to Experience TMB
Classic Tour du Mont-Blanc Self-Guided
I specifically wanted to do the route self-guided, but I also wanted the reassurance of having an experienced company behind me. From my very first enquiry, choosing Run the Alps was an easy decision. The team were knowledgeable, responsive and genuinely helpful, which immediately gave me confidence that I was in good hands.
Everything was extremely well organised. The accommodation was excellent throughout, the GPX files and detailed route notes were easy to follow, and the new app was fantastic. Having everything in one place made each day simple to plan, and knowing the team has extensive local knowledge and strong relationships across the Alps was incredibly reassuring. I also thought the trip represented excellent value for everything that was included.
If you’re thinking about doing the Tour du Mont Blanc, my advice is simple: just book it. Then work your way through all the information Run the Alps provides. It answers every question you’ll have and helps you prepare properly without feeling overwhelmed.
There are three items I wouldn’t be without: a lightweight windproof jacket, a lightweight SPF sun hoodie, and hiking poles. I used all three every single day. Pack as lightly as you can, but make sure you have enough equipment to keep yourself safe if the weather changes or if you become injured.
Once you’re out there, remember to stop and just take in the views. Photos are wonderful, but they never quite capture the scale and beauty of the mountains. Some of my favourite moments came from simply standing still and appreciating where I was.
The scenery was everything I had hoped for, but one of the biggest surprises was the people I met along the way. I had so many great conversations, shared memorable moments with fellow hikers and runners, and made new friends who share my passion for the mountains.
While every stage of the Tour du Mont Blanc is spectacular, my two favourite sections were Les Contamines to Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme, and Courmayeur to the Di Meiten Turn. Both offer unforgettable mountain scenery and some of the most rewarding terrain on the route.
My accommodation highlights were Hotel Bouton d’Or in Courmayeur and Le Petit Refuge, both of which provided a warm welcome after long days on the trail.
This trip had been a dream of mine for many years, and it exceeded every expectation. Run the Alps made it possible to experience the Tour du Mont Blanc independently while knowing expert support was there whenever I needed it.
