The Alps have some of the best trail running in the world. They also have some of the best mountain cafés and restaurants! This Level 2-3 trip takes in two of the iconic mountain towns of the Alps: Chamonix, in the Savoyard region of France, and Zermatt, in the Swiss-German region of Switzerland.

We’ve assembled some of our favorite mountain cafés and restaurants in these two mountain towns, creating a trip that features great trail running– and great food and drink!  Starting beneath the Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland, we’ll have time to explore this legendary town and the flowy single-track on each side of the valley, while the iconic Matterhorn looms 2,870 meters higher above the village.

Next, it’s time for the Zermatt Marathon. There are three different distances available in this popular race, all of which start on road, switch to gravel track and then smooth trails, all the while climbing to a dramatic finish high above town!

After four nights in Zermatt, we head to France, to the Vallée du Trail, Chamonix. In this video Run the Alps staff and friends show you around our home of Chamonix, France.

Chamonix is the undisputed world capital of trail running, with hundreds of miles of single track that wind through the valley under 4,810-meter high Mont Blanc.

We’ll sample some of the finest trails in the Alps, and spend a night at Montenvers, a mountain hotel at 2000m!

In each town, there are often options to extend or shorten the day, based on personal interests.

While on our runs, we’ll enjoy café au lait and tarte au myrtille at mountain huts, and in the evenings choose between local Savoyard (think fondue and raclette!) dishes and excellent asian fusion restaurants.

Detailed travel instructions will be provided. If you have flexibility in your schedule, arriving a day earlier is recommended to help you get over jet lag.

Please note that flights from the US usually depart the day before.

Departure

Your tour includes a shared shuttle between Chamonix and Geneva Airport. Plan your departure for the day the tour ends at the earliest. Since Geneva airport is only ninety minutes away by shuttle, it is possible to leave the day the tour ends.
